OK hear me out, when alot of us first watched FLCL, we were in middle school, or at least I was. It felt pretty impactful. It was a story with so many moments that felt like something that I had actually experienced.  Even if it wasn’t aliens and robots in my hometown, it was still a small town that sucked, felt like nothing happened there. That’s when cigarettes were cool and rebellious.  You felt like a punk, someone in the know, fucking cool kid if you smoked a cig at the skate park or under the bridge. Your smuggled contraband broken and cracked in spots from sitting hidden in the front left pocket. 

A lot has changed since then. The new FLCL alts are… fine… but it definitely doesn’t hit the same. The cigs get smoked out of necessity. We’re grown, no one is going to stop us, so they don’t get hidden. They stay tall and professional before and while they get smoked, no longer fucked up with lint and hidden in sandwich baggies. 

Some things are the same though.
The original FLCL is so goddamn good.
